Gymnastics Team

I spent some time with the gymnastics team.

The team gave me a letter to put on my letter sweater. A letter sweater was a prized possession for me at that time. I have lost it over the years, and wish that I had it back. The sweater was white, and the letter was maroon.

I Wanted to be a Pilot

I wanted to become a pilot when I was growing up. I took a pilot training course, and found out that I couldn't pass eye requirements for pilots. I was able to fly an Aeronca Chief on my own with a copilot flying with me. It was not necessary for the copilot to take control. He was there only to be used if needed.

The most difficult part of flying is landing. Over 40% of deaths occur when landing. As the plane is near the runway, the pilot estimates the height of the plane. At the same time the pilot uses the controls as if to make the plane go up. The plane stalls, when it cannot go up. The best case scenario is for the plane to fall a few feet to the runway; not twenty feet for example.

Stalling can be practiced at altitudes. You can pull back on the controls at 1000 feet, until until the plane stalls and drops.

I was able to do the necessary checks, taxi down the runway, ascend to 1000 feet, and make a 45 degree turn to the left. Then I could do whatever I wanted before approaching the runway to land.
