Who did you go the prom with?

Concordia didn't have proms. Why? I don't know, and I don't remember any discussion about it.

We did have something unusual.

We did have a jail. It was used to lock up captured slaves. That's all I know about it.

We did have a homecoming queen. She selected me as her escort, which I was proud of.

I was homecoming king in some respects.

A friend of mine in Defiance and I went to Ft. Wayne on date with a couple girls. Her whole family left her house on the night we had the date.

What did you look forward to the most as a child?

I liked experimenting with electricity. I had a car horn. I would hook up the positive terminal to a battery, and when I hooked up the negative terminal, the horn would blow. Years later, when I was around thirty years old, I built a stereo amplifier, out of a kit. The amplifier had tubes, and they glowed with blue flickers, when playing.

Andy Wolfrum ran an electric line to our house. I wired our house with a plug, and two light fixture outlets, when I was about fourteen. I did it all by myself without any help. Nobody asked me to do it. I paid for it.

I worked for a farmer while I was in grade school. He had a device in his chicken house, which turned on the lights early in the morning. It was an alarm clock which dropped a handle, and turned on a switch, when the alarm went off. It impressed me.

I looked forward to Grandma Wolfrum’s cooking and baking. Her dandelion salads appealed to me, and her sugar cookies also.

My grandfather, Andy, would take me along, when he got food ground up for the animals. He would go to the bar, while he was there, and take me with him.
Thank you Nancy for the kind words.
I’m posting everything on STORYWORTH to my website.

What is your best advice when it comes to raising children?

My answer is based on this Wikipedia article:

Four styles are discussed in the article:

Authoritative, Authoritarian, Neglectful, and Indulgent/Permissive.

I choose the Indulgent/Permissive style.

I choose my grandfather Andy Wolfrum’s style.

I knew a girl, whose life was harmed by an authoritarian mother.

I think my wife, Mary Ruth, agrees with me on this.

What famous or important people have you encountered in real life?

Angelo Fonzi from Pittsburgh, PA was a famous person, who my wife and I knew.

His business was located in Hammond, IN at the end of his career. Hammond IN is near Chicago IL His freight terminals were in Hammond IN, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Maryland, Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, and Georgia,
This is intended to show the size of Great American Lines, and is not precise. It does show that Angelo Fonzi’s life touched many lives over a wide area.
Universal Am-Can Ltd is the name of the company, which bought Great American lines.
Frank Miglioroto, Sfaceat Kiyway on Facebook, is a former driver for Great American Lines.
Fonzi’s wife Ellen sold their house in Dyer IN for $900,000. She has moved to Pittsburgh PA.

2018 Events in Allison Park, a Pittsburgh suburb.

We lived in a Devlin’s Pointe Townhouse in Allison Park, Pennsylvania, which is a Pittsburgh suburb.

We ate at King’s restaurant often.
Joseph D. Gizienski and Donna ate there too.
Joe bought his dog hamburgers at the restaurant, and he paid for our meals.
One of his early accomplishments was he started a truck he had bought, which had been underwater. He was an owner operator in the trucking business, and had employees working in the freight trucking business. He owned a garage in 1972, where he salvaged 18 wheeler type tractors. He built a truck garage near his home about the same time. He bought stationary diesel engines in the US, shipped and sold them in South America. He bought a farm, which had a vein of coal in it, removed rocks, and sold the coal. Tesone Trucking  Company in Allison Park, helped to remove the rocks. He bought and constructed a tankfarm tank on his local gas station. Estimated price to fill the tank; millions of dollars.
Our daughter Vicki Callender was 12 years old in 1972. She was a babysitter for Joe. He had five daughters. Tammy, Terry, Tracy Theressa, and Tina. Joe supplied the daughters with cars. They dove the cars as a team, when they were three to ten years old. Tammy, the oldest, would steer, and Tina the youngest would push down the gas pedal.
Our daughter Vicki is now 62 years old, and is secretary at East Union Presbyterian Church. West Deer police still meet at East Union Presbyterian Church, and Tina Gizienski is in West Deer law enforcement.
Joe lives in a recently built home. It has an elevator to take passengers up from the basement.

Lake Erie has shallow water in some places.

In 1954 my wife and I visited my cousin in Toledo, Ohio.

Phillip took us on a boat ride in Lake Erie in his boat.
A storm came up, and we thought we were in an emergency.
I don’t know how we found out, but the water we were in was waist deep.
Phillip Layne became a MD foot doctor.

Which sports did you play in high school?

I spent some time with the gymnastics team.

The team gave me a letter to put on my letter sweater. A letter sweater was a prized possession for me at that time. I have lost it over the years, and wish that I had it back. The sweater was white, and the letter was maroon.

Glaucoma is fluid pressure in eyes

My pressure was high, and I had sharp pains in my head. I went to the doctor, and she sent me to an ophthalmologist. My daughter, Vicki Callender took me to doctors, when I lived in Pittsburgh, Pa. The ophthalmologist sent me to the Allegheny General Hospital Ophthalmology Department in Pittsburgh, Pa. One eye went blind. I was treated, and part of the treatment was putting drops in my eyes. My cataracts were removed. I was treated about five years at Allegheny General. Then we moved to Arizona, and I have been treated about five years in Arizona. Eye drops and inspections of the eyes every few months is the treatment. One of the eyedrops is Lumigan. A thimble full of Lumigan is about $1000. A small bottle of Lumigan is $600, and it is about one half a thimble full. I just went to the doctor. The last appointment was six months ago. I’m scheduled to go to the doctor four months from now.

My feline companion
We came back to Arizona in 2018. There were two cats living here. when we arrived. Roxie, a Siamese cat, was one of the cats. She slept in a cooking pot in the kitchen cabinets. She was attracted to me, and started sleeping between my feet in bed. She started staying in my bedroom most of the time.
Cats are unsanitary, and although I didn’t want to be exposed, I tolerated her.
She cuddles next to me, she bites me, she lashes out with her front paws. and taps me on the shoulders when she wants attention. She licks my hand, when I touch her front paw. Her ears and her back feet are cold. She likes her cold back feet held, when she cuddles. She makes eye contact, but it is limited. She makes vocal sounds, when she is happy. When I make the bed, she follows me around the bed, making vocal sounds. She gets the urge to bite then.
I go to bed around 10 pm. Roxie knows when it is 10 pm. She leaves my room to go to take care of her needs around 10 pm. We have a “scratcher” in my room, which both cats use. She avoids the other cat, and likes my protection, when he comes into my room. She gets out of the way, when my wife puts drops in my eyes.
If I put my hands underneath the sheets, she will attack any motion under the sheets.
When I eat in the kitchen, she stops by and makes her presence known.
When I go to the bathroom, she knows where I’m at, and comes in quite often.
She isn’t afraid to show the other cat that she will stand up to him. She spends time in the window sill in the daytime. She warms up in the window sill.
A plumber came to the house. Roxie got under the covers on my bed. I'm, pretty sure she was being cautious, because there was a stranger in the house.

I attended a one-room school.

I attended a one room school in Ayersville, Ohio in 1936. The new school opened in 1937. A female teacher taught 6 grades. I was in the first grade. There were two general stores near the school. One morning I saw a dead man frozen in water in the ditch.

There was another one room school about one half mile from our house. I went to a community event there. I was less than 6 years old. One of our neighbors was in a play in which he ate a whole pie, or pretended to. I was convinced that the neighbor was evil, if he could do that. I made sure to avoid any contact with him.

Andy Wolfrum purchased the coal storage building at the school; later on. He added it as a kitchen to his house.

Were you involved in any organizations in high school?

All boys were required to be in the ROTC. Reserve Officer Training Corps. There were four companies. I was Captain of company D in my senior year.

We had Swords as part of our dress uniforms.

When I was in the US Army, I could have gone to officer training, but I would have had to stay additional time.

I went to the square dance club, and learned how to square dance. My wife and I went to square dances later on.

What was your first boss like?

Mr. Harold Gershmel was more of a companion than a boss. He wasn’t aggressive, was entertaining, and was devoted to his wife and family.

He was an excellent piano player

I don’t remember conversations with him regarding teaching. This was true throughout the entire school year.

What famous people have you met and how did you meet them?

Ft. Eustis Post Soldier of the Week

I was appointed post soldier of the week in Ft. Eustis, Virginia.

Brigadier General Frank S. Besson was commandant of the post in 1953.

I was his aide for one week.

General Besson became a Four Star General.

One day at a Houston Texas Kroger store

Several thugs, who lived near the store, entered the store. I was hit with a pistol. It knocked me out. I thought that I had been shot. A tooth was damaged. The store manager was shot. The bullet went through his upper body, but didn’t have any consequences. Cathy, head cashier, was shot and killed. A cashier was shot, and she was paralyzed from the waist down. I went to Cathy’s funeral. It was unusual. Participants said they were happy that Cathy was in heaven.
Nancy That is a horrific event God was watching over you . So sad things like this happen.

Did you ever move as a child?

Yes. My father found a job as a farmer near Ney, Ohio. We lived in Ayersville, Ohio, and Ney was about twenty miles away. The farmer job included a house. We lived there for a whole school year. A star baseball pitcher lived in Ney at that time.
Nancy I didn’t know this thank you Don! Yep Ned Garver was from Ney, Ohio.
Don Wolfrum  I couldn’t remember Ned Garver’s name. (And a lot of other ones)

My father had big problems

My father had big problems.

He didn't have close friends.

Instead of love and kindness, he hated and was discontented.

One example, he was a Lutheran and openly displayed a dislike for Baptists.

My mother was on her deathbed. My father ranted about her going off and leaving him.

He was treated, but it didn't help.

I think Dave and Nancy will agree with me.

Are you still friends with any of your friends from high school? How have they changed since then?

As near as I know, all my former classmates are dead. I visited Norbert Schackel and Herman Reese around 1948. They lived in Decatur, Indiana, which is about twenty miles southeast of Ft. Wayne, Indiana. My classmates would be 92 years old now in 2022. I have a 1945 high school yearbook, which has pictures of my classmates. Thanks to my brother Dave, who sent it to me. Louis Nuechterlein was a senior when I was a freshman. He was an organist. The following video is of one of the pieces of music, which he played.

What is your best relationship advice?

What is your best relationship advice?

You will be physically attracted to your partner. Try to find a partner, who you want to share your whole life with. Be willing to tolerate your partner's character, and vice versa. You must trust your partner.

Did you ever take any road trips?

I’d say a trip from Defiance, Oh to Dallas, Tx is a great road trip. We moved to a Dallas suburb; Oak Cliff. Mary was hired immediately as a hostess in a seafood restaurant called the Zuider Zee. I went to work in gas stations. I was hired by Kroger in their warehouse. Kroger decided to transfer me to their Houston Tx division after several years, I supervised warehouse transportation. There were 100 tractors, 200 trailers, and 100 drivers. 13 drivers served the Lake Charles La area. McAllen Tx was the southernmost area served by the Houston division. I learned how to ripen bananas, and I was a banana ripener. I was also a Kroger store manager once upon a time. I ended up in Curtisville Pa after 13 years in Texas.

What is one of your favorite meals?

Spaghetti.
Any spaghetti, but my wife Mary’s spaghetti is the best.
My wife Mary and our grandson Henry.

What do you think is the meaning of life?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meaning_of_life

I'm a Capitalist, Believer, Conservative, Constitutionalist

I'm a former owner-operator. I owned my own trucks. I leased the trucks to freight companies. I was happy to see the ICC (Interstate Commerce Commission) removed from US regulations. Freight rates went up after they were removed. Airline ticket prices went down.

I think health insurance should be sold by capitalist companies, not by the government. Government should be limited. It is bad enough as it is. Making government bigger is expanding a bad thing. Ronald Reagan would agree.

I think the constitution should be interpreted as it was intended at the time it was written; originalism.

What were your favorite toys as a child?

My favorite toy was my bicycle. I liked to ride it, and I liked it’s paint job.

It was durable. You didn’t have to work on it to keep it running. It performed well on roads. I didn’t climb mountains with it

I had a pair of clamp on roller skates, but I didn’t have any concrete to skate on. I had a BB gun, but didn’t have money to spend on BB’s.

I did like to play checkers, and Chinese checkers. But they are games; not toys.

Which people were the kindest to you in life?

Which people have been the kindest to you in life?

My wife, grandparents, and two others.
Joseph D. Gezienski, who lives in Curtisville, Pennsylvania is one. My truck broke down near the Route 8 Exit on the Pennsylvania turnpike. I discovered that the truckstop had put gasoline in my diesel truck. My wife was living in Houston, Texas. I put my truck in the repair shop, and that’s where I met Joseph. He owned trucks, and he offered me a job. He was also involved in many other businesses. I started driving, and Joe suggested that I buy a truck from him. I did, and bought another truck from him several years later. My wife moved from Houston, Texas, and we bought a house in Curtisville, Pa. My daughter Vicki was 12 years old at the time.
I quit driving my own truck, and went to work for Angelo Fonzi. He had quite a few trucks of his own, and owned a company, which had hundreds of owner operators. I was top revenue man for about 15 years. My wife, Mary, worked for Fonzi too. We worked in Hammond, In. I drove a 34 wheel rig from Hammond, In to Buffalo, NY. The route was through Canada. The route was from Gary, In to Detroit. The route went from Detroit, through London, Hamilton, and Niagara to Buffalo, NY, There were three 34 wheel rigs running to Buffalo. Myself, James Farler, and Jerrold Luipold.
My wife lived in Curtisville, Pa the first years of driving from Gary, In to Buffalo. I had a 400 mile commute. On Friday night I took a cab to the train station in Gary, In. I would get on the train bound for Pittsburgh, Pa. The train had a delicacy; boiled shrimp sandwiches. I slept in the seats. One of the main stops was Cleveland, Oh. Saturday morning I would arrive in Pittsburgh. We would go home, and I would leave Pittsburgh around noon Sunday. Monday morning I would be back in Gary, In in the truck.

The house pictures are our home in Curtisville, Pa.
We had a hot tub and a pool table.
My wife has been very kind for 69 years.

How did you get your first job?

A parochial school in Napoleon, Ohio contacted me, and offered me a job teaching school.

They required that I attend River Forest Concordia University for one term, and I would start work after one term.

I completed the one term at River Forest, and taught the second and third grade class at St. Paul Lutheran parochial school.

I lived in the home of one of the church members.
The church paid for my tuition at River Forest.
I had students, who were tested, and they were at 8th grade level
One girl student came to school every day, but never said a word for the whole school year. She didn’t participate in anything.
I was 18 years old when I was contacted to teach school
I taught for one year, and I was hired by GM

Amazing so proud of you!

Galveston TX

Galveston TX

We lived in Texas from 1963 to 1973.

We lived in Dallas and Houston. We lived in Houston about five years. Galveston was about one hour drive from Houston, and was directly connected by interstate highway. There are also ferries, which operate between Galveston Island and the mainland.

There are communities on Galveston island. Jamaica Beach is one, and Sea Isle is another.

We bought a lot on Sea Isle, which allowed us to use the swimming pool at Sea Isle.

There was an island near Sea Isle. My friend Ernie Bramlet had a cabin on the island. He invited me to visit the island numerous times. The surface on the island was covered with sea shells. Birds had nests in the sea shells.

I saw stingrays and dolphins while I was at Sea Isle. The stingrays didn't appear to be dangerous.

I bought a boat motor, while we were on Sea Isle. The motor disconnected and fell into the water, and we couldn't retrieve it.

One person had a round house, his theory being that the hurricane wind couldn't be effective against a round surface.

There was an old couple, who owned a shrimp boat. They acted like teen agers, and were as happy as could be.

Shrimp boat captains earn between $30,000 and $130,000 a year.

Please explore Sea Isle by clicking on "Layers" (bottom left) and the icons there. Also explore by clicking on the "arrows" (when your cursor is on the road, an "arrow" appears), and to explore futher down the road.

I found a shrimp boat commercial net. I left it; having no idea that is was worth about $2000.

There are fisheries near shrimper's locations, which buy seafood. The shrimp boat pulls in to the fishery dock and unloads.

Enjoy!

My grandparents were very kind to me.

My grandfather was wise, clever, and could see the future. He raised chickens for eggs, he had milk cows for milk, he had all the normal crops, but he raised tomatoes for Campbell’s Soup. He sold fresh produce, such as strawberries and tomatoes, to local grocery stores. He sold eggs and produce to local grocery stores. He had peanuts in his garden, and roasted peanuts.I helped milk the cows. He sold milk to the Defiance milk company.

Grandpa gave a $10,000 gift to each of his children about 1950.

Grandpa gave beef and pork to my mother and father.

Grandpa liked sardines and herring. He liked smoked herring and pickeled herring. He would buy a large container of herring once a year. The container was a gallon or more of pickeled herring.

Grandpa had a Whippet car, which he didn’t drive, and a Fordson steel wheel farm tractor, which he didn’t use.

He set up the rule that only people with Wolfrum as their name could live in the Wolfrum home. Ralph inherited the farm, and was married to Martha. Ralph died, when he was about 49 years old. Martha lived in the Wolfrum home, and took in a partner, she couldn’t marry the partner, because it would change her Wolfrum name; removing her from the home. Martha lived there for about 40 years after Ralph died. She died when she was 85.

Grandma Wolfrum was a good cook. She would tell me to get her a chicken. I would, and she would cook it. One time I butchered a mud turtle, and gave it to her. She cooked it, and wanted more turtles. She prepared dandelions for greens quite often. She had asparagus plants, also. She had horseradish plants in her garden. Grandma made sugar cookies topped with one hickory nut. They were softer than commercial sugar cookies. She baked cookies about once a week. Her recipes were secret. Grandma Wolfrum fell down steps in the JC Penny store in Defiance, Ohio and died. Andy was waiting in the car outside the store. He commented that any legal actions wouldn’t bring her back.

Ladies were invited to Grandma’s house to make quilts. Several women would be invited to her house, and they would sew on quilts.

Workers would enjoy Grandma’s meals at her house. There were quite a few workers, who ate Grandma’s meals, at wheat harvest time.

I carried water in jugs to the workers in the fields.

Grandma Layne rotated living with her children. Her husband had died before I was born. She spent the majority of her time with her son Ollie, who lived in Defiance, Ohio. She made and sold quilts. She made good biscuits too. If I remember correctly, she received Old Age Pension; $8 a month.
Grandma Layne baked biscuits on our wood burning kitchen stove.
My mother prepared most of our meals on the wood burning kitchen stove. She made pancakes, buckwheat pancakes, fried potatoes, potatoes with scrambled eggs, crepes, etc.
My mother canned peaches every year. She bought the peaches from an orchard several miles away. She usually bought two bushels of peaches. She would put a half peach with a seed in it in cans of peaches. She only did it in one out of ten cans. The peaches in the can with the seeded peach had a different flavor.

Gymnastics Team

I spent some time with the gymnastics team.

The team gave me a letter to put on my letter sweater. A letter sweater was a prized possession for me at that time. I have lost it over the years, and wish that I had it back. The sweater was white, and the letter was maroon.
